Seven years ago, Chip Decker, Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte’s artistic director had an idea for a new play festival hosted by the organization.
“We are a professional theatre company that helps develop new works,” Decker said. “Part of our mission is presenting new theatrical compositions; so the logical next step was helping fostering that.”
With support from the Women’s Impact Fund, that idea becomes a reality for Actor’s Theatre as the organization kicks off its nuVoices for a nuGeneration festival this week.
Late last year, the organization put out a call to playwrights for festival submissions.
“I was hoping for 75 submissions,” Decker said. “We ended up receiving 288 submissions total.”
From those submissions, independent judges whittled down the top-10. From that group, they selected the top-four who would have the chance to come to Charlotte for the festival.
The festival begins on Thursday, Aug. 9 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 12. Each of the scripts will be staged twice during the festival.
The winner will be selected by a panel of theatre critics based on merit. Audiences will also get a chance to participate in the judging by selecting their favorite, which will be included with the judges’ scores. The winning play will be produced for Actor’s Theatre’s 2013-2014 season.
