Things to know before you go vote

Richard Mike Cochrane

2017 Candidate for Town of Mint Hill Board of Commissioners

Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts), science or history while growing up and its impact on you.

I have always had an appreciation for music and art. I have been a part of a choir since high school and for the past 40 years have been involved in Church choirs and stage presentations. My wife is also very talented in music with a beautiful voice and she is able to play the piano and organ well and she has taught me how to really appreciate the time and training it takes to master the art of music.

What’s your vision for the town? What role, if any, does art, science and history play in advancing that vision?

We already have a very good art association in town and I want to see that grow with some possible help from the Town. We also have a historical association which has a wonderful start on preserving our history of Mint Hill and they are already being supported by the Town. With me being a life long resident on Mint Hill I heavily support Historical Association and their exposing the history of our Town for all to enjoy.

Do you support public funding of arts, science, history, and heritage programs by your town through funding of ASC? Please explain.

I will support the funding of the arts, science and heritage programs as I mentioned above Being a life long resident of Mint Hill much of our Town’s history includes my family tree and it is interesting to me to see how they played a part in history.

A key finding in past cultural plans was the need for facilities outside of downtown Charlotte to support cultural programming and community events and programs. Would you support the continued partnership between the public and private sectors in addressing these needs and the use of public funds to support capital projects?

I would have to review each request or need but as I mentioned earlier I have a passion for music, art and history and would like to support the enhancement of those items anyway I can

National research shows that the arts and cultural sector contributes to quality of life and economic stability. What strategies would you pursue to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy in our region?

Try my best to support the various programs and projects that the arts and the cultural sector brings to our community both with my individual support and any support that would be appropriate from my position on the Board.

Katrina “Tina” Ross

2017 Candidate for Town of Mint Hill Board of Commissioners

Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts), science or history while growing up and its impact on you.

I played violin in the Charlotte Junior Symphony. As a part of the ensemble, I learned so much more than just music theory and performance skills. I learned the value of practice, of working with others and that each role is important. Those lessons have stayed with me and served me well through the years.

What’s your vision for the town? What role, if any, does art, science and history play in advancing that vision?

In my “dream world”, Mint Hill residents could enjoy living, shopping, and experiencing culture in our own town. We would be able to provide cultural events in our downtown and in our parks that would encourage resident participation in the life of our community. My vision for Mint Hill includes providing residents with expanded access to culture in our hometown and easier access to existing programs/events now available in the surrounding area.

Do you support public funding of arts, science, history, and heritage programs by your town through funding of ASC? Please explain.

Yes. The experience that third grade students have when they visit the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village, located in Mint Hill, is a wonderful example of public dollars working to provide a great educational experience for young students. The other arts groups in Mint Hill that receive partial funding from ASC provide an array of cultural opportunities for our residents. It is in cooperation with ASC that the Town of Mint Hill is able to present Family Fun Nights that offer live music free of charge to anyone desiring to attend.

Yes.

National research shows that the arts and cultural sector contributes to quality of life and economic stability. What strategies would you pursue to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy in our region?

I believe an emphasis should be placed on the impact the arts and cultural sector provides to the economic viability of our region. Unless the general public understands the importance of the sector, they will not be as likely to support it. I think an educational campaign would be very beneficial for the continued vitality and growth of the arts and cultural sector,
