Thanksgiving is just days away and with the turkey and dressing comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday but not a specific day for giving back and making a difference – the true spirit of the holiday season. This is why New York’s 92nd Street Y brought together a group, including United Nations Foundation, DonorsChoose.org and Unilever, to launch #GivingTuesday.
On Tuesday, November 27 hundreds of nonprofits, including the Arts & Science Council, individuals and companies will participate in a national day of giving to raise funds and awareness through social media for important causes everywhere. Individuals are essential to the success of #GivingTuesday. Some ways you may be involved include:
- Spread the word about #GivingTuesday and invite your friends and family to share in the celebration of giving. Sample posts and tweets are available by clicking here.
- Choose your favorite project or nonprofit and make a contribution on or around #GivingTuesday.
- Donate your time to your favorite charity on or around #GivingTuesday.
- When you gather with your family on Thanksgiving, ask everyone to empty their pockets. Collect 10% of the money and select a project or nonprofit where you all want the money to go.
