Crowdfunding: What’s the story?

It is the holy grail of fundraising: finding new donors that are passionate about supporting arts, science and history in our community. Charlotte’s premiere crowdfunding site, ASC’s, has done just that. In just two short years, this online marketplace for cultural projects has generated more than $1.08 million through nearly 4,000 individual gifts in support of 356 diverse projects in Mecklenburg County. Nationwide, power2give recently passed the $4 million mark in funds raised in the 20 markets where the platform is active.

The corporate and foundation communities have been a key partner in this success, providing over $500,000 in matching funds for Charlotte projects. Most impressive of all, 44-percent of all power2give donors are first time donors to the organization posting projects. In one dramatic case, a donor subsequently made a six-figure gift to that organization, demonstrating the potential power this new platform has for our community.

What is power2give’s secret? Our experiences in Charlotte and across the country have proven that crowdfunding is consistently most effective when two things occur. First, organizations compellingly convey their story through the project’s title, photo, and brief narrative, and in so doing clearly demonstrate the impact they are having in the community. Second, they use social media and other promotional channels to reach one or more constituent groups with whom their story resonates on an emotional level. Project donors then share their passion for their projects with friends and colleagues via social media links embedded in the power2give platform.

From the individual donor’s perspective, the key to this – and why giving through is so appealing – is their ability to direct their support with laser-like precision to the projects and organizations they are passionate about, and power2give provides transparency on how their gifts will be utilized by the project.

Care about education? 

In October, announced the renewal of two challenge grants, sponsored respectively by The Leon Levine Foundation and UTC Aerospace Systems, that will generate a total of $180,000 for education projects.

The $50,000 Levine Cultural Education Challenge will support arts, science and history education projects on by matching donations, $1 for every $2, to education projects that align with the N.C. Common Core & Essential Standards.

The $10,000 UTC Aerospace Systems challenge is earmarked to support donations to science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, projects, $1 for every $2, on

Select projects on that meet the criteria for the Levine Cultural Education Challenge include:

  • $10,000 for The Choir School at St. Peter’s “Adopt a Chorister” program, which helps cover the costs for music, uniforms, materials, accompanists and instruction for program participants; and
  • $5,200 to provide an artist in residence for the Bringing Art Back to Schools program and to cover student trips to the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture to see cultural and visual art exhibits.

Select projects on that meet the criteria for the UTC Aerospace Systems grant challenge include:

  • $3,460 for the Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation MeckTeens program to repair a greenhouse at McDowell Nature Reserve so teens can grow vegetables for cooking programs and sell plants and vegetables to support programming throughout the year.
