Arts Advocacy Day

Why This Matters: ARTS Day 2018 is the opportunity to advocate for and advance big ideas for the arts at the state level.

Ready to organize for the arts? Join ASC for ARTS Day 2018 in Raleigh on May 24 to advocate for public funding for the arts in North Carolina and meet one-on-one with legislators to speak about its impact in our community. ARTS Day is an opportunity to share your stories with policy makers and unite with other advocates to promote policy that sustains and grows public funding for the arts.

In FY18, the state, through the North Carolina Arts Council, awarded close to $1 million in grants to cultural organizations in Mecklenburg County. ASC is grateful for funding from the Grassroots Arts Program, which is re-invested in the community through ASC’s Cultural Vision Grant program and Operating Support Grant program that supports emerging, grassroots organizations. ASC also received funding to support Regional Artist Project Grants and an Arts in Education Grant that supports ASC’s Wolf Trap program, an early-childhood education program that uses the arts to ensure children are Kindergarten ready.

For FY19, we will be advocating that state arts grants are equal to $1 for every person in North Carolina – an increase of $3.7 million – to impact cultural organizations and creative individuals statewide, and promote innovation and excellence in the arts.

ASC will be attending ARTS Day on Thursday, May 24, and invite you to come on the bus with us. Tickets for this day are $35 and include lunch. ASC will arrange transportation to and from the Legislative Visit Day in Raleigh and will coordinate meetings with our state legislators. The bus will leave from Center City Charlotte at 5:30 a.m. and will return around 4:30 p.m.

Prior to the event, ASC will provide participants with additional information about the trip and how best to prepare for ARTS Day 2018, including information and talking points to prepare for the legislative visits. For more information on ARTS Day and this year’s legislative agenda, visit artsnc.org.

If you are interested in attending ARTS Day 2018, please email Allyson Beetham by Friday, May 4, 2018. Please also indicate if you would like to travel on the bus with ASC. We hope you will join us in Raleigh and share your story!
