I can’t believe 2010 is coming to an end. When I reflect on a variety of things that took place over the course of the year, I can truly say that it’s been a great one for ASC.
Here are my top three ASC accomplishments for 2010:
1. Completed the Campaign for Cultural Facilities – This $83 million private campaign was off to a great start when launched in 2007, but slowly came to standstill at $63 million and extended for a year in 2009 due to the challenging economic climate.
Thanks to a generous $15 million gift from The Leon Levine Foundation and a $5 million gift from Duke Energy in honor of the Levine’s, the campaign was completed in April and the Wells Fargo Cultural Campus was renamed Levine Center for the Arts.
In addition, all of the facilities at Levine Center for the Arts are now open – on time and on budget!
2. Launched Random Acts of Culture – Thanks to a grant from the Knight Foundation, local artists have been providing 5 minute cultural experiences called Random Acts of Culture (opera, tango, modern dance, classical music) to hundreds of residents whether they are waiting on a flight at the airport or shopping at a farmer’s market. The Random Acts of Culture have been a hit!
We received this e-mail from Fred Bayley who experienced a Random Act while he was at the airport.
“Kudos for a job well done at the Charlotte airport today! Thanks for making my day. It was such a delight to have my schedule of flying out of one of my favorite cities paused while I enjoyed your Random Act of Culture.”
More Random Acts of Culture are being planned for 2011.
our $7.3 million goal thorugh challenge grants from Foundation For The Carolinas and The Leon Levine Foundation. With additional support from the public sector, we are investing $10.3 million in the cultural sector this fiscal year.
We truly thank all of our donors and volunteers for their support of ASC. We look forward to having a great 2011 and working hard to shape a vibrant cultural life for all.
Happy New Year!
