ASC Announces $11.2 million Goal for 2009 Annual Fund Drive

The Arts & Science Council (ASC) announced a goal of $11.2 million for its 2009 Annual Fund Drive that raises dollars to support Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s cultural community.  Dollars raised from the Annual Fund Drive support arts and cultural education, artists, neighborhood cultural projects and arts, science, history and heritage organizations. Last year, ASC met its $11.2 million goal by raising $11,224,626.

“In setting a campaign goal flat to last year, we are trying to balance sensitivity to the community during the current economic climate with recognition that the funds ASC raises are crucially important to cultural partners and activities across Charlotte-Mecklenburg,” said ASC President & CEO Lee Keesler.   “While we know it will be a challenging campaign, we are already inspired by the support of donors who care deeply about the cultural community.

The six-week campaign, ending March 6, is led by Sue Gorman, owner, Sue Gorman Interior Designs and James Jackson, executive vice president, premier banking and investment southeast division executive, Bank of America.  Gorman and Jackson, who served as campaign cabinet members during the 2008 campaign and currently serve on ASC’s Board of Directors, are leading a team of over 1,300 volunteers from the corporate and non-profit sector.

Support for the Annual Fund Drive is generated through individual donations, employee workplace giving campaigns running businesses throughout Charlotte-Mecklenburg, as well as corporate gifts.

There are a variety of fundraising efforts to support the campaign this year.  Individuals can purchase a $100 raffle ticket to “The Big Game” on Feb. 1 in Tampa Bay, Fla. on www.artsandscience.org.  The package includes two tickets to “The Big Game,” roundtrip airfare, hotel, hospitality passes and concierge services.  Charlotte area Harris Teeter stores will sell $1 and $5 donation cards at the check-out lines Jan. 14 – 27.  Local restaurants, participating in Restaurant Day, on Wed., Feb. 4, will donate a percentage of their sales to the campaign.  View participating restaurants at www.artsandscience.org.  Additionally, Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Carolina Place Mall and Birkdale Village are holding a book fair from Jan. 28 – Feb. 1.

ASC is expected to invest over $14.5 million to support the cultural community during fiscal year 2008-2009 with donations to the Annual Fund Drive along with funding from the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency, and its endowment earnings.  Nearly $14 million will be invested in direct funding to support arts, science, history and heritage through cultural education, community projects, operations of cultural institutions and new public artworks. Over $579,000 in indirect investments will support skill and capacity development opportunities for staff and board members of cultural and community organizations, creative individuals as well as audience development initiatives.
