Arts & Science Council Awards Restricted Operating Support to the Charlotte Symphony for FY10
The Arts & Science Council (ASC) has announced it will award a restricted operating support grant of $900,000 to the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.
ASC will grant the Charlotte Symphony $75,000 in July and August and may distribute additional funds under the $900,000 funding allocation based upon satisfactory review by ASC of the economic viability of the new strategic path chosen by the Charlotte Symphony. ASC’s Board Chair will appoint a small group of board and staff to conduct the review of the symphony’s revised plans and ask the group to recommend ASC’s response to the ASC board for approval.
“Even in the best of times, the business of running a symphony orchestra is complex and challenging,” said ASC President & CEO Lee Keesler. “ASC understands and appreciates the efforts being made by Jonathan Martin, his staff and board to reposition the organization for long-term success. We provide this restricted funding to support the Charlotte Symphony’s determination and implementation of a new strategic path forward that is economically viable.”
ASC’s FY10 grants pool will be down from the prior year as a result of reduced contributions to its Annual Fund Drive, coupled with reductions in the City and County Manager’s recommended budgets. ASC grant awards will be confirmed once final budgets are approved.
The Charlotte Symphony has received funding from ASC since 1958 and has historically received the largest operating grant. In FY09, the symphony received $1,947,424 --- approximately 17% of ASC’s operating support grant program. In the last 15 years, ASC has invested $26.2 million in the organization through operating support, technical assistance, special project, stabilization and access grants.
