Arts & Science Council’s First Round of Investments Total $8.34 million

The Arts & Science Council’s (ASC) board of directors approved 118 grants totaling $8,336,496 as its first round of investments to support Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s cultural community for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. ASC will make another round of investments in the fall for artists, special projects and technical assistance. A complete grants listing is available at www.ArtsAndScience.org.

ASC has fewer dollars to invest in the cultural community for 2009-2010 as a result of its 2009 Annual Fund Drive generating $7 million, a 37 percent shortfall from $11.2 million raised during the 2008 campaign, along with cuts from the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and proposed cuts from the North Carolina Arts Council.

As a result, ASC cut $1 million from its operating budget and suspended the following grant programs and initiatives for fiscal year 2010 --- Advancement, Cultural Tourism, Arts in Healthcare, Latino Community Initiatives, Creative Renewal Fellowships, Public Art School Playground Build, Higher Education Initiatives, Shared Services Initiatives and Business Strengthening America. ASC has also closed its North and South Mecklenburg offices.

“The continued support of our public and private sector donors will enable ASC to support over 100 programs and organizations whose work in arts, science, history and heritage will enrich us all,” said Robert Bush, senior vice president of Cultural & Community Investment for ASC. “During theses challenging times, the importance of engaging our fellow citizens and visitors with excellent cultural programming is more important than ever. We thank our donors whose generous financial gifts help ASC shape a vibrant cultural life for all.”

The investments for 2009-2010 are in the following grant categories:

Cultural Education in Schools – Increases access to arts, science history and heritage in schools throughout Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

 • Cultural Project – Increases access to arts, science, history and heritage offerings and strengthens the quality of cultural programming in neighborhoods and towns across Mecklenburg County.

Cultural Access – Increases community access to African American, Asian, Latino, and Native American arts and cultural experiences.

Mecklenburg Town Initiative – Supports arts, science, history and heritage experiences in Mecklenburg County towns.

Operating Support – Provides unrestricted funds to arts, science, history and heritage organizations for general administration, operations and programs.
