ASC President & CEO Retires June 30, 2009
The Arts & Science Council’s (ASC) President & CEO Lee Keesler announced his plan to retire June 30, 2009. Keesler joined ASC in 2004.
Keesler made his retirement intention known to ASC Board Chair Don Truslow in
July in order to allow sufficient time to undertake a thoughtful and orderly search for his successor.
“Lee’s leadership allowed ASC to reposition itself to meet the needs of our growing and changing community through efforts that include ASC’s new business investment model,” said Truslow. “While I am supportive of his personal decision, he will be sorely missed. He has been a tremendous asset for the cultural community.”
The approval of ASC’s new five-year organizational roadmap to broaden community engagement and build long-term sustainability is a highlight of Keesler’s career along with marshalling ASC’s two revenue activities, the $83 million Campaign for Cultural Facilities to support capital and endowment costs and the Annual Fund Drive to support cultural education, creative individuals, neighborhood projects and arts, science, history and heritage organizations.
“This was a hard decision to make,” said Keesler. “I believe it’s good for our organization to bring in fresh leadership periodically. It allows the institution to re-energize and adapt to a changing community. My priorities right now are to successfully complete the cultural facilities endowment campaign and the 2009 Annual Fund Drive while continuing to actively work with ASC’s board and staff.”
A native of Charlotte, Keesler served as ASC’s board chair from 1998-1999 and chaired its Annual Fund Drive in 1997 along with other civic work. He is a graduate of Duke University and holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Wake Forest University’s Babcock Graduate School of Management. He and his wife, Garrell, have a son Andrew, and a daughter, Anne Chambers.
