Arts & Science Council Invests In Emerging Cultural Organizations

The Arts & Science Council (ASC) has named three recipients of the Cultural Innovation Grant which invests in emerging cultural organizations that show promise programmatically and innovate in serving the diverse population.

The grant is a partnership between ASC and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. ASC matched a $60,000 grant from Knight Foundation and is in the second year of supporting emerging cultural organizations. Recipients receive a $15,000 grant per year for two years. The investments will support programmatic opportunities, assist professional and volunteer leadership to gain the necessary expertise and abilities to strengthen the institution and improve the financial stability, strategic risk management and/or growth capacity.

Cultural Innovation Grant recipients:

• On Q Productions will retain marketing and sales expertise to drive ticket sales and increase revenue and will find space for basic operation.

• Charlotte Folk Society will alter its operating structure by outsourcing certain ongoing functions to remove reliance on the organization’s all volunteer staff. They will establish a procedure to pay for outsourcing through new revenue streams.

• Historic Charlotte, Inc. will leverage available technology to support its mission of preservation advocacy in the greater Charlotte region. It will expand its reach to a much larger and more diverse audience.

This year’s grantees join Carolina Actor’s Studio Theatre (CAST), Charlotte ARTery and Charlotte Viewpoint which received the Cultural Innovation Grant last year. CAST and Charlotte ARTery were able to relocate to new facilities and build capacity and Charlotte Viewpoint to redesign its website and grow readership.

“Through our partnership with Knight Foundation, we are able to strategically invest in emerging organizations that need an extra push of support to move to the next level,” said ASC President Scott Provancher. “We have been pleased with the results from last year’s investments and look forward to seeing great progress from this year’s recipients.”

ASC will announce additional investments in the cultural sector in the coming months. To see all of the investments ASC has made to date visit ArtsAndScience.org.
